Often, aquarium owners know something is wrong with the air pump when it starts making odd noises. However, they may also notice that no air is going into the tank. When the problem appears to be with the air going into the tank, the first thing to check is the aquarium air tube. If the tube is clear, the pump may not be functioning properly and either needs repair or replacement. In that instance, or if the pump is making strange noises, it is time to open up the pump and see what might be wrong. Three components that are often the culprits of these problems are the diaphragm, valve, and magnetic arm.

Replacing Malfunctioning Components
Replacement parts for an aquarium air pump are usually readily available. In order to facilitate repair, the owner must first remove the pump from the aquarium. The owner should also unplug the unit to avoid any electrical problems. A small screwdriver is necessary to remove the bottom of the air pump to access the parts that may need replacing. Owners should conduct a visual examination to determine if the pump is repairable. If it contains rust or is otherwise visibly damaged, it may need replacement. However, if just some of the components are malfunctioning, repair is possible. Below is a chart explaining the three common components that need repairing.

Air pump diaphragm: A flap that opens and shuts under the power of the motor to force water in and out of a chamber to create circulation

Valve: Prevents water from going back into the pump if the power goes out

Magnetic arm: Creates the pumping action of the diaphragm via the electric coil

A number of air pump repair kits contain some or all of these components. It is also possible to purchase some of them separately, such as the air pump diaphragm.

Maintaining the Aquarium Air Pump
After learning how to repair an air pump that malfunctions, it is also a good idea to take certain steps to ensure the air pump's longevity. Regular cleaning not only prolongs the life of the air pump, but is also healthier for the inhabitants of the aquarium. In order to clean the pump properly, the owner should remove the impeller and use a small brush to remove any debris. The impeller may have some cracked blades and owners should replace it if it is damaged. While cleaning the pump, it is often a good idea to clean or replace the filter as well to ensure a clean environment for the organisms in the tank.

In addition to cleaning the pump and filter, a clean tank is also important to allow aquarium equipment to last longer. A weekly partial water change is a good idea, as is investing in an algae scraper to clean the sides of the aquarium. For deeper cleaning, a gravel vacuum is ideal for removing pieces of debris that are floating in the tank or that have settled among the gravel. It is also important to have an aquarium water test kit on hand to check chemical levels in the water, including pH levels and nitrates. Performing this kind of maintenance on a regular basis ensures a tank is operating smoothly and safely for its inhabitants.
